You think it will never happen to you, but it can! When you least expect it, even you can become a victim of car burglary. I know, because it recently happened to me at a local gym. The police officer who arrived at the scene said I did everything right:
- Parked under a light.
- Secured purse and packages in the back of my Jeep under a cargo cover.
- Locked doors.
Unfortunately, I was being watched. The thief knew where I put my “valuables”. They busted out the right rear window in the Jeep; probably used a crowbar to retrieve my purse, and left me to suffer the consequences.
The month of December is finally upon us, and so has the time for holiday spending. It’s not only a time when shoppers take advantage of sales, but also a time for criminals to take advantage of the shoppers. Here are a few safety tidbits to keep in mind:
- Be alert and aware!
- Keep shopping bags, valuables, purses, and wallets close to you.
- Recognize that there is safety in numbers. Shop with friends and relatives instead of going alone.
- Return to your vehicle frequently to unload purchases in the trunk. You might consider moving the vehicle to a different location with each “drop-off”.
- Watch out for loiterers near your car.
- Park in a well-lit, well-trafficked area of the parking lot.
- Have your keys in your free hand well before approaching the car. It will save time in getting into the car and the keys can be used as an improvised weapon if necessary. Lock the door immediately after getting in.
- Watch out for friendly strangers.
I guess it all boils down to common sense, use it! Happy shopping; just be aware that anyone can be a victim.
