I just saw this short article in our Chrysler Newsletter about the NHRA Nationals Event that was held in Colorado, and realized that our local track, Lucas Oil Raceway in “Indianapolis” would soon be hosting some of the BEST events of the year! What does that mean? Mark your calendars, save the dates – 3 great events are coming up!

I live in Brownsburg or “Nitro Alley”, just a short jaunt ‘down the road’ from the track. Weather permitting, when the windows in our kitchen are open; I can hear the dragsters and the roar of their engines! Call me weird, but even at 60+ years old, this sound is ”music to my ears”. This .686-mile oval hosts several premiere events during the course of the year and welcomes racers that are starting to hone their skills as well as those in some of the top levels of motorsports. Talk about fan traffic!

What are the upcoming events that should be saved to your calendar? Check them out!

Event #1: SpeedFest is “just around the corner” and will take place at the track on July 26-27 and will feature ARCA, USAC Midgets and Silver Crown along with the CRA Super Series.

Event #2: The grand-daddy big event to hit the track is the 58th annual Mac Tools U. S. Nationals held on Aug. 29-Sept. 3.

The Mac Tools U. S. Nationals is the world’s largest and most prestigious drag race and fans from across the globe will make their annual mecca to Lucas Oil Raceway to watch the stars of the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series battle for the most coveted trophy in all of drag racing. We are talking AWESOME
You have GOT to check out this video!

Event #3: The newest and fastest growing event to keep an eye one is the Monster Mopar Weekend which will visit the facility on Sept. 21-23.

Fans of Plymouth Road Runners, Dusters, Chargers and Challengers will able to walk the facility taking in some of the best classic American made cars. Cars and Mopar, what a combination, check out this view from the staging lane!

Shameful, but I HAVE to put a plug in for Brownsburg. I have been there for 15-years this fall, and it has grown to be a great partner for the NHRA racing series. Off of Northfield Drive * located between Hwy 136 and  I74W, there is race shop after race shop. Quite a haven for the enthusiast! Several times a year those shops are open to the public; one of the most attended is John Force’s shop. Check out this recent video during one of these fan favorite events.

NHRA + Mopar equals FUN times! Mark those calendars!

The Consumer Digest 2012 Best Buys have been announced!

Makes one wonder, what criteria is used to determine those vehicles that makes “the list”? After some research, here is what I found — selections are based on behind-the-wheel assessment, safety ratings, ownership costs, warranty, price, comfort,
ergonomics, styling and amenities—reflect CD’s view of which 2012 vehicles offer exceptional value for the money. O’Brien Auto Group vehicles named to the list include:

  • Chrysler 300
  • Dodge Challenger
  • Ram 1500
  • Chrysler Town & Country
  • Dodge Grand Caravan
  • Dodge Durango
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • FIAT 500
  • Toyota Tacoma

“Few purchases are more important, or require more research, than buying a new vehicle,” says Randy Weber, Consumers Digest’s publisher. “Our analyses underscore our commitment to ensure that consumers are as satisfied with their auto purchase years after making it as they were on the day they drove off the lot.”

Given the condition that the Chrysler Group found themselves in a little over a couple of years ago, this serves somewhat as an indication of positive results from the revamping that’s in progress at the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram brands under the direction of Fiat, Chrysler’s new Italian parent. As a dealer representing their brands, our Tom O’Brien Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram stores and our FIAT Studio have their ‘face toward the sun’ and are looking forward to what the future brings!

Bicycling Indianapolis

Ever want to see Indianapolis from a different perspective?  Try biking around the city, I find it to be a unique way to spend a weekend morning.  Very little traffic, that early morning freshness, it’s a great experience.

I like to start on Mass Ave . (as of this writing you can still park on the North end without paying for parking). Then me and whomever I’ve convinced to get up way to early have a nice average paced ride up the Monon Trail to Broad Ripple, from there we cross over to the Canal Tow Path.  I’d recommend a Hybrid or Mountain bike if you’re going on the Tow Path, a road bikes tires are just to fragile.

The Tow Path takes you down through Butler all the way down to the White River Greenway.  From there I ride down the White River back into downtown.  The views are spectacular.  We have a times followed the Cultural Trail back over to Mass Ave. to finish the ride, but usually we just ride the city streets (now featuring bike lanes) back around.  It’s between 20 and 25 miles depending o

For the serious cyclist this is not a route you can blast through to get your workout.  I stick to the county roads when I want that, however it’s a great way to get some basic exercise and see some sights.  I recommend not rushing and just pedal nice and easy.

This is a very safe way to check out the city, minimal vehicle or pedestrian traffic to be dealt with. Winter is closing in, but there is still a few weekends to dress a little warmer and experience Indianapolis in a whole new light.

In a word….awesome! The kudos continue to roll in for the Ram 1500! The most recent award was presented from pickuptruck.com…their “$30,000 Truck Shootout”. They went to the half-ton manufacturers and forced each one to answer the question: What’s your best truck for $30,000? They allowed them to equip the pickups any way they wanted, knowing that PickupTrucks.com values function over form and steak over sizzle. The trucks included in the shootout included:

• 2011 Ford F-150 Regular Cab
• 2011 Nissan Titan King Cab
• 2011 Ram 1500 Quad Cab
• 2011 Toyota Tundra Double Cab
• 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500 Extended Cab

The objective was to find the truck that offered the most value for your dollar, just as if you or I walked in to a dealer with a firm $30,000 budget. To determine a winner, they considered the performance data collected over the week, sifted through the various specs and information about each truck, measured the value they offered to owners, and added in their own driving impressions.

They logged a lot of miles and a lot of time in each truck, and if this was just about performance numbers, fuel economy and payload, their choices might well be different. But it wasn’t. This test was about much more than that — specifically, which truck gives us the most capabilities, the most creature comforts and the fewest compromises for our $30,000 price tag? Which is the most truck for our money? Which of these five competitors would force us to make the fewest concessions while doing all the things we like and have to do? With that said, here are the results: 1. Ram 1500 – 2. Toyota Tundra – 3. Ford F150 – 4. Nissan Titan, and 5. Chevy Silverado. Here is a link to view the specifics: 2011 $30,000 Shootout!

Earlier in the year, the experts had posted the following ‘kudos’:

*Per automobile.com….The pros of purchasing a 2011 Dodge Ram Pickup 1500 abound. Compared to other vehicles in its class, the Ram rises to the top echelon. A smooth, stable ride, better fuel efficiency than similar pickups, top of the line audio/visual tech features, and plenty of power to tow optimum loads make this rig a top contender.

*Edmunds Says….The 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 is a top pick in the full-size pickup truck segment thanks to its winning combination of strong performance, smooth ride and a classy cabin. Best-in-class ride quality; well-made interior; clever storage spaces; powerful V8; lots of interior space.

The Dodge RAM has learned so much over the years and applied the right solutions in the right place. It was by far the better choice between these five pickups.
