Buying a car can be overwhelming; in fact, the pleasure of getting a new car can be quickly clouded during the financing decision-making process and price negotiations. Besides price haggling, many car shoppers are plagued with the decision to lease or buy. Which financing decision is right, and why?

  • Buying – The Benefits: By far, the greatest benefit of buying a car is that you may actually own it one day. Implied in this benefit is that you’ll one day be free of car payments. The car is yours to sell at any time, and you are not locked into any type of fixed ownership period.
  • Leasing – The Benefits: Perhaps the greatest benefit of leasing a car is the lower out-of-pocket costs when acquiring and maintaining the car. Leases require little or no down payment, and there are no upfront sales tax payments. Additionally, monthly payments are usually lower, and you get the pleasure of owning a new car every few years.

When it comes to whether to buy or lease a car the options can be confusing. To help you make an informed decision we have provided the information below, we hope you find it informative and useful. I understand that this post looks a bit lengthy, but I promise it is good information and worth the read!
Blog_Lease or Buy
Step 1: There is a selling price whether you buy or lease your next car. You can negotiate the selling price even if you are planning to lease, just as you would if you were planning to buy.
Step 2: If you were to put the same exact amount of money down on a leased car and on a financed car, the lease payment would typically be lower than financing. This is one of the biggest draws of leasing; you can get more car for your money. With a lease payment, you’re only paying for the car’s depreciation during the term of your lease, whereas with a loan payment, you’re paying for the entire purchase price of the car.
Step 3: If you own your own business, and the car you are considering will be used for business purposes, you can write-off most, if not all of the payments by leasing. If you buy, you can only write-off a portion of the depreciation or take the mileage deduction. We recommend you consult with your tax professional about the write-off.
Step 4:  Generally speaking, it is harder to get approved for a car lease than it is for a loan. So make sure to check your credit and see if you qualify.
Step 5:  A car lease will have an annual mileage cap. The norm is between 10,000-15,000 miles. Once you go over the specified mileage on your leasing contract, you will incur mileage charges. If you think you will go over the mileage cap, we recommend that you pre-pay for the additional miles at the time of signing, because it’s typically cheaper to pre-pay rather than to pay at the end of the lease. When you buy, there are no rules on mileage, the car is yours to drive as little or as much as you like.
Step 6:  There’s less commitment when you buy than when you lease a car. When you buy, you can drive the car till the wheels fall off, or you can sell it or trade it in at any time and pay off the remainder of your loan. With a car lease, if you want to end your lease before the term is up, you will incur costly early termination fees.
Step 7:  Most leased cars are under warranty for the duration of the lease, so repair costs are minimized, which is nice perk. Some brands like BMW and Toyota also offer free maintenance programs during all or part of their lease agreement, which means that all you need to worry about is putting gas in the car. Keep in mind that manufacturer warranties differ in length and coverage.
Step 8: Leasing a car gives you more flexibility when it comes to getting rid of your old car. Unless you actually drive your car till it dies, you will have to deal with selling or trading it in at some point, which can be a hassle. Whereas, at the end of a lease term, you can: 1) Turn in your car, and either buy another car, lease another car, or re-lease from the same brand; 2) Buy the car you were leasing for the predetermined residual value on your lease contract; or 3) Buy the car you were leasing and sell it to a third party for profit (if your car is worth more than purchase price offered on your lease contract). Because the used-car market has been so strong the last couple of years, some consumers can actually make money by buying and then selling their leased car for more than the residual value of the car.
Fact #9: Customizing is not advisable with a lease. Generally speaking, you can do it, but at the end of your lease, you will have leave the customizing and lose your investment or remove any custom parts you have added. (If removed, you have to pay any damage to the car from the modifications you made.)
Fact #10: Reasonable wear-and-tear is expected and is written into a car lease contract. A lease contract will also specify what is considered “excessive.” It’s safe to say that if you return your leased vehicle with scratches, dents, worn tires, or other not-yet-repaired damages, you will be billed for those repairs. So, although there is no written contract, you will need to be mindful of the condition of your vehicle if you plan to resell.

The decision to lease or buy will always depend on your personal circumstances. If your objective is one day to be rid of pesky little car payments and you actually want to take ownership, buying a car may be the best option. If, however, if your goal is to drive a new set of wheels every three to four years and minimize your monthly costs, leasing a car may be a good alternative.

With the hot temperatures expecting to return this week; I recently talked to one of our long-term Service Advisors to find out what most of our recent service clients were having the most problems with when they came into the service department. I was really surprised by the response. Dead batteries. I thought, really?

Did you know….An average of one out of four vehicles gets a new battery every year? So says Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. Summer is the season for major car-battery problems. Heat, not cold, shortens battery life.

Excessive heat and overcharging are the two main reasons for shortened battery life. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, this damaging the internal structure of the battery. A malfunctioning component in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, allows too high a charging rate. That’s slow death for a battery.

To get the most life out of a battery:
• Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging.
• If your battery is the type that needs to be topped off, check it regularly, especially in hot weather. Add distilled water when necessary.
• Always replace a battery with one that’s rated at least as high as the one originally specified.
• Keep the top of the battery clean. Dirt becomes a conductor, which drains battery power. Further, as corrosion accumulates on battery terminals it becomes an insulator, inhibiting current flow.

It’s summer time, and the weather is hot. We all know how the words to that old song go, but not everyone is as familiar with how the warmer weather can impact your car’s performance and reliability. With summer’s prime driving season upon us, it’s more important than ever to make sure your car is in tiptop shape.

  • One of the first things dealership technicians will verify during a summer inspection is the state of your vehicle’s tires. The extra heat thrown off by the pavement during the warmer months of the year can add additional stress to tire rubber that is worn out or nearing its replacement date.
  • This last point is also crucial for dealing with any rainstorms you might encounter while out on the highway – bald tires are a significant contributor to hydroplaning, which can see you lose control of your car when encountering standing water or heavy rain. Technicians will also verify that each of your tires is filled with exactly the right amount of air, as too much or too little can contribute to excessive tread wear, as well as lower fuel economy.
  • The next stage for most summer tune-ups takes place under the hood where your vehicle’s air filter will be inspected to determine whether it must be replaced.
  • Other engine-related summer maintenance items that can improve your car’s miles per gallon include spark plugs and fuel filters.
  • In addition to performing the standard brake pad, rotor and fluid checks that should be done every time you have your automobile in for servicing, one of the final things that dealership technicians will verify as being in good working order is your car’s cooling and air conditioning systems.

Summer car maintenance doesn’t have to be complicated – in fact, getting your car ready for the hottest and busiest driving season is as simple as stopping in at your local dealership and putting yourself in their capable hands.

Yes, it’s that time of the year again! Family road trip! You’ve checked out and planned the best route to get you there! Perhaps you have decided the time is right to purchase a new vehicle? So, before the trip, you decide to check out  a brand new Town & Country, Journey, Grand Cherokee, 300, Wrangler Unlimited, or one of the many Toyota vehicles.

Or, if you have decided to take your own car, you’ve had your family hauler serviced to make sure that the a/c is operating at capacity, the brakes are good to go, the oil has been changed in our Service department (CJDR Greenwood / CJDR Indianapolis / Toyota), and the windshield wipers and washer fluid container is full and both are ready for any bug battle you encounter.

Does this sound familiar?  “Are we there yet?” being asked only 15 minutes after pulling out of the driveway. Then there are the many needed potty breaks, I’m hungry breaks, and the “I need a snack” right after the “I’m hungry break”. There are several different things you can do to keep your sanity during a long road trip. The O’Brien Automotive Family has borrowed some ideas that will help to reduce the boredom, interact with your kids and make the trip feel shorter for all of you!

Car game ideas for toddlers, preschoolers and younger children.

  • Draw it: Call out letters, numbers, animals and places, but instead of dealing with messy  markers, use a Magna Doodle.
  • Nursery rhymes and songs: Brush up on your nursery rhymes and toddler songs! Little ones love to sing their favorite tunes from preschool and playgroups.
  • I Spy: Before you embark on your road trip, strategically place large, colorful items around      your car and within your child’s view from his or her car seat.

Car games for older kids

Older kids enjoy learning new things, being active and being creative — even while in the car.

  • I Spy: Challenge your kids with a game of I Spy while on the move.
  • Travel Bingo: Bingo is a classic road trip game. A magnet set makes playing in the car fun and easy.
  • Alphabet game: Encourage your kids to explore their surroundings to find the letters of the alphabet on road signs, license plates and other signage visible from the road.
  • License plates: Make a list of  the U.S. states and silently check off each one as you see a matching license plate. Then set a number and the first person to reach that number wins.
  • Name that tune: Make a playlist of your family’s favorite songs and ask your kids to guess the name of the song and the artist.
  • Finish the song: After guessing the name of the song and the artist’s name, stop the music to see if your kids can finish the rest of the song on their own.
  • Punch buggy: Punch buggy is a more physical car game where you punch your neighbor (lightly) whenever you see a VW Beatle or a different type of vehicle.

Additional ideas that work

  • Picture it. Give each child an inexpensive disposable camera, and allow them to take photos of anything of interest they see along the way. After the trip, have the photos developed and let each child create their own homemade storybook about their travels.
  • Travel totes. This one takes a little advance planning, but it’s worth it! Pick up an inexpensive tote bag for each child and fill it with books, crayons, coloring books, a note pad, their favorite portable snacks and treats, and a favorite toy. Each child having their own bag will eliminate back seat battles over whose turn it is to use the crayons next.
  • And pack plenty of snacks! Pack snacks: crackers, fresh fruit and nuts, pre-packed servings of pretzels, cookies and chips.

We had such a celebration here at the dealership yesterday afternoon! Both the President of Tom O’Brien Greenwood and our Office Manager (Tom Miller and Judy Thompson) were celebrating 40-years of service with the organization! They look to young to be enjoying such an accomplishment, don’t you agree?

The O’Brien family automotive business started in January 1933 when Thomas J. O’Brien opened Sullivan and O’Brien DeSoto and Plymouth dealership on Virginia Avenue here in Indianapolis. The Tom O’Brien Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram store, located in Greenwood, is the original franchise that was started in 1933. Who would have guessed then that we would have employees who would join the family organization and would remain for almost half of the years they have been in operation? Quite a feat in any business; let alone the automotive retail business that has such a known reputation for high-turnover!

One of the things that make us different is our Employee First Philosophy. This may seem strange in today’s “Customer First” business world, but it is actually the foundation for how we treat our customers. We feel that the only way to ensure that our customers are taken care of properly is to do everything we can to make sure that our employees enjoy working here and feel like they are an integral part of our success. There is no unimportant position at any of the O’Brien Automotive Family dealerhsips – from the lot attendant, to the office clerk, the parts runner, to the service porter – we could not function without everyone on our team being happy and productive.

Congratulations to both Judy and Tom for your service to our organization!

By the way, thought you would enjoy a video made by Thomas J. O’Brien when he opened our current south location. Most of the employees featured in the video are still with us today…speaks volumes about who we are!

Going to the race this weekend? The O’Brien Automotive Family has a long history with the race. I have only been with the organization for a couple of years, so you can imagine my surprise when the Tom O’Brien CJDR Greenwood President carried in a large copy of the photo included in this post into a meeting this past Monday! Check out this interesting tidbit of history!

Per our company history, the O’Brien family automotive business started in January 1933 when Thomas J. O’Brien opened Sullivan and O’Brien DeSoto and Plymouth dealership on Virginia Avenue here in Indianapolis. One of their first advertising ventures included sponsoring car #25 during the Indianapolis 500 in 1933, a mere 5-months after opening. The car was driven by Shorty Cantlon.


Shorty’s race ended short of the finish that day, but the experience of sponsoring a vehicle for the dealership was well-received by the general public. Consequently, they went on to sponsor a car several years after that initial race.

As we pause to celebrate the 1-year anniversary of O’Brien FIAT, our “new baby” in the O’Brien Automotive Family, we also want recognize our employees, suppliers and partners in business, and most importantly – YOU – our customers! Our mission, since 1933, has always been more than giving the customer what they expect; it’s about exceeding their expectations. We strive to create customer loyalty and to consistently deliver a high standard of customer service.

With our newest venture, the O’Brien FIAT Studio, we hope to build the type of loyalty that we have seen at our other locations! A great example of an O’Brien raving fan is the Kessing family!

The Kessing family has purchased cars from The O’Brien Automotive family for 4 generations! The 4th generation – Bo Kessing – just purchased a beautiful 2012 Chrysler 200.The picture includes: Bo Kessing, Bob Kessing Jr, and Bob Kessing Sr. The Kessing’s grandfather (not pictured) purchased from our grandfather on Virginia Avenue in the ’30’s. This is the type of loyalty that we strive to build each and every day, one family at a time…since 1933! Our sincere thanks to the Keesing family!

Our employees help us to make a difference as well! It is a well-known fact that in the automotive industry, there is a high turn-over rate. Not so with the O’Brien Automotive Family! We take pride in the fact that most of our employees have been with us for 20+ years! So, the Service Advisor, Business Manager, or Salesman that you see today, will most likely be here to take care of your needs tomorrow!

The business started with Thomas J. O’Brien in 1933 (check out our company history and our story about the watermelons) and has grown to include two Tom O’Brien Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram locations, O’Brien Toyota Scion, a stand-alone Service Center that takes care of all makes and models, a full-service Automotive Collision Center, and in 2011 the O’Brien FIAT location.

The O’Brien Automotive Family is now in the fourth generation of automobile sales and service! This family knows that getting customers the first time is easy. It’s getting them to come back time and time again that takes a lot of work. The O’Brien family knows that no matter how big you are or how loyal your consumers are, you constantly have to work to nurture those relationships to have continued growth.
